WFNX is a New England commercial alternative rock radio station. Its audience is based in Boston, Massachusetts, where it broadcasts on 101.7 and 101.3 FM, but it also serves New Hampshire and southern Maine on 92.1 FM, and Rhode Island on 103.7 FM. There was also a WFNX 103.7 in Boston. WFNX is owned by FNX Radio Networks, a subsidiary of the Boston Phoenix magazine. The Rhode Island station was sold and became a sports station, forcing thousands of listeners to change to WAAF or WBRU. Colloquially referred to as "FNX", the station began broadcasting in 1983. It was one of the first commercial stations to play college rock. WFNX brands itself "the true alternative", which is probably an attempt to contrast the type of music it plays with WBCN, its rival. While WBCN plays standard alternative music, WFNX offers a more eclectic playlist, often giving substantial airtime to new and less mainstream artists and even some local bands. WFNX also prides itself on being an independent radio station, unlike WBCN, which is owned by Viacom. WFNX features several specialty shows. Leftover Lunch, which airs weekdays from 11:45 AM to 1:30 PM, features classic alternative hits from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Alter Ego, which airs weeknights from 7:00 PM to midnight, includes a mix of new songs that aren't receiving much exposure and older songs from less popular artists alongside alternative rock staples. WFNX's popular DJs include:
