WPXN WPXN

WPXN - Definition and Overview

WPXN broadcasts on Channel 31 in New York City and is an affiliate of the Paxson Television Network. It was originally started as WUHF-TV then it became WNYC after the Municipal Broadcasting Authority took ownership. It was sold in the 1990s to a join venture of ITT and Dow Jones who changed the call letters to WBIS and they used the trademark moniker S+. Unfortunately shortly after S+ premiered the format was taken off the air and the station was sold to Paxson Communications which premiered the PAX television network a little over a year later.

On September 11, 2001, the transmitter facilities of Channel 31 as well as six other New York City television stations and several radio stations were destroyed when two hijacked airplanes crashed into and destroyed the World Trade Center towers.
