WTBS is a television station in Atlanta, Georgia broadcasting on NTSC channel 17 and digital television channel 20. It is owned by Time Warner subsidiary Turner Broadcasting System.
In the 1980s, entertainment mogul Ted Turner put the station's signal on satellite to distribute it as a cable television offering, and used it as the cornerstone channel to launch what became a multi-billion dollar cable entertainment empire. Due to broadcast rights issues, WTBS and the cable channel TBS became separate entities, each airing different programming.
WTBS also is the only physical broadcast television station owned and operated by Time Warner. Interestingly, it is not an affiliate of Time Warner's The WB Television Network, an honor that belongs to Tribune Company-owned WATL.
