Waffle iron - Definition and Overview

A Waffle iron is a type of cooking appliance used to make waffles. It usually consists of two hinged metal plates, molded to create the square indentations found on waffles. The batter is poured between the plates, and heated to make the waffle. Commonly these come equipped with an internal heating element, although waffle irons exist that do not depend on electricity; they generally are held over an open flame.
