Waimea is a census-designated place located in Kauai County, Hawaii. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,787.

Geography

Waimea is located at 21°57'42" North, 159°40'25" West (21.961662, -159.673604)¹.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 3.3 km² (1.3 mi²). 2.7 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 18.60% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 1,787 people, 620 households, and 456 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 657.1/km² (1,707.2/mi²). There are 676 housing units at an average density of 248.6/km² (645.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 12.65% White, 0.11% African American, 0.22% Native American, 42.98% Asian, 12.31% Pacific Islander, 1.12% from other races, and 30.61% from two or more races. 7.22% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 620 households out of which 33.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.3% are married couples living together, 15.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.3% are non-families. 22.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.80 and the average family size is 3.27.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 22.4% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 19.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 94.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.8 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $44,398, and the median income for a family is $46,591. Males have a median income of $38,542 versus $26,513 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $18,778. 11.5% of the population and 8.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.2% of those under the age of 18 and 8.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
