Wakkanai, Hokkaido - Definition and Overview

Wakkanai (Japanese: 稚内市; -shi, Ainu: Yam Wakka Nay) is a city located in Soya, Hokkaido. It is the northernmost city in Japan.

As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 42,686 and the density of 56.11 persons per km². As of 2000, the total area of the city is 760.80 square kilometers.

The city was founded on April 1, 1949.
