Walter Smith (born 1948, Glasgow) is a former football player, but is better known as a football manager. He is currently manager of Scotland
Smith started his footballing career at Dundee United in 1966, and returned to the club in 1977 as part of the coaching staff after two years at Dumbarton
He has had managerial spells at Everton and most notably Glasgow Rangers where he helped them win nine Scottish Premier League championships in a row. Firstly as assistant manager to Graeme Souness from 1987-1991 then as manager from 1991-1997. He also took Rangers to within one match of the Champions League final in season 1991/92.
Smith also had assistant manager spells at Dundee United under Jim McLean and most recently at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2004.
Smith beat off competition from Gordon Strachan to become manager of the Scotland national team and was appointed on 2 December 2004, suceeding Berti Vogts who had resigned in November.
