Wanaka, New Zealand - Definition

Wanaka is a town situated on the shores of Lake Wanaka in the South Island of New Zealand. It is the gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park.

It was originally settled during the gold rush excitement in the 19th century. Forestry was important as props were needed for the mines. These days tourism is a big money earner especially for the extreme sports that New Zealand is renowned for e.g. jetboating, skiing, snowboarding etc. Farming is also a mainstay of the local economy.
