War hawks - Definition and Overview

War Hawks were those people in the United States prior to the War of 1812 who favored westward expansion and supported a war against Britain to achieve this. The War Hawks were mostly young members of Congress, primarily from southern and western states, and notably included Speaker of the House Henry Clay of Kentucky and John C. Calhoun of South Carolina.

The term is used today to describe people with hawkish positions on war.
