Waskaganish is a town of about 2000 people on the south-east shore of James Bay at the mouth of the Rupert River. The majority of its population is Swampy Cree. The town has only had road access for a few years - until recently it was accessible only by float plane, or by boat from Moosonee. Waskaganish means "little house" in the Cree language.
