Old Main, one of the most important buildings on the Wayne State University campus.
Wayne State University, located in Detroit, Michigan is a research university with 13 schools and colleges. More than 350 major subject areas are studied by 31,000 graduate and undergraduate students. Its official student newspaper is The South End.
WSU also hosts the largest medical school in the United States, and public radio station WDET.
Over the last few years, WSU has been aggressive in constructing new green glass buildings, including a new "Welcome Center", which was controversial because of its cost and displacement of several local businesses. New residence halls have been built, and another one is currently being built.
The student body government is headed by a Student Council which is supposed to have representatives from all colleges of the university. While meetings are supposed to be public, the Council sometimes closes them when non-members show up. The Council does not disclose many records of its activities, but few students ask.
Some, but not all colleges of the university, have a Student Senate which reports to the Student Council. The School of Law has its own Student Board of Governors that is in many ways independent of the Student Council.
The school's sports teams used to be called "Tartars", but a need to be politically correct combined with a desire to alliterate changed their name to "Warriors". There is men's baseball, basketball, cross country, fencing, football, golf, ice hockey, swimming and tennis, and women's basketball, cross country, fencing, ice hockey, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball.
