Westerburg - Definition and Overview

Map of Germany showing Westerburg

Westerburg is a small town of roughly 6000 inhabitants, located in the northwest of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany (district: Westerwaldkreis). The city is named after the castle built on a hill above the medieval central part of the city. The castle was first mentioned in 1192, and together with the castle church from the 16th century it is the town's landmark.

The city is located at 7° 59' East, 50° 34' North, and received town rights in 1292 from King Adolf of Nassau. Today it is also the seat of a Verbandsgemeinde, which administrates the city and 23 surrounding municipalities.
