Whitchurch Bridge - Definition and Overview |
|
Whitchurch Bridge as seen from Pangbourne Meadow
Whitchurch Bridge is a road bridge over the River Thames in England. It spans the river between the villages of Pangbourne, in the county of Berkshire, and Whitchurch-on-Thames, in the county of Oxfordshire.
Whitchurch Bridge is one of the few remaining private toll bridges across the River Thames, being owned and maintained by The Company of Proprietors of Whitchurch Bridge entirely from toll receipts. At the time of writing (December 2004) tolls range from 10p for cars to £1 for vehicles of over 3.5 tonnes; the bridge has a weight limit of 7.5 tonnes.
There has been a bridge on the site since 1792, but the current bridge is the third on the site and dates from 1902.
