William Loeb - Definition and Overview

William Loeb (1905 - 1982) was a U.S. newspaper publisher. He was the publisher of the Union Leader of Manchester in Manchester, New Hampshire between 1948 and 1982.

Loeb was famous for his politically conservative views, which were magnified by New Hampshire's importance as the first presidential primary state. He is best remembered nationally for his alleged role in attacking Edmund Muskie through the newspaper, derailing the Maine senator's 1972 presidential bid, but in New Hampshire his major legacy is an anti-tax pledge taken by most political candidates.
