William McMaster Murdoch - Definition

William McMaster Murdoch (28 February 1873 - 15 April 1912) was the First Officer of the Titanic.

He drowned on duty while boarding passengers on the life boats. In his home town of Dalbeattie in Scotland there is a memorial to his heroism and a charitable prize has been established in his name.

The 1997 movie Titanic portrays him taking bribes from Cal Hockley (the fictional 'villain' of the movie played by Billy Zane), shooting passengers and finally shooting himself on the head (the TV mini series of the previous year also showed these events). 20th Century Fox admitted the events were totally fictious and contributed $8,000 to the prize fund.
