William Perkins - Definition and Overview

William Perkins (1558- 1602) was the inventor of mauve, a color derived from coal oil. He was a scientist in Early Modern England, who worked in the emerging field of chemistry. He discovered the process of extracting colors from coal oil, which was plentiful at the time, and initiated the new use of using these colors as dyes. He was also one of the original scientists turned entrepreneur because he set out building his own company to make and sell his products.
