Typical Windows Mobile 2003 Home Screen
Windows Mobile is a compact operating system for mobile devices based on the Microsoft Win32 API. It is designed to be similar to desktop versions of Windows.
Windows Mobile 2003
The first version, Windows Mobile 2003 was released in 2003. It came in 2 versions, Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC and Windows Mobile 2003 phone edition, which is designed especially for Pocket PCs which include GSM phones (as Qtec or O2).
Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition
Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition (otherwise known as Windows Mobile 2003SE) includes the option to switch from landscape to portrait. Pocket Internet Explorer (otherwise known as PIE) includes a new way to layout web pages. You can now view pages in One Column so you don't have to scroll left and right, only up and down. Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition now supports 640x480 VGA resolutions as opposed to the 320x240 resolution of the original release. Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition wasn't originally going to contain this feature, however due to pressure from Pocket PC manufacturers, Microsoft decided to add this feature to Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition.
The Dell Axim x30 was the first Pocket PC to feature Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition. Another resolution Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition supports is QVGA for Smartphones. The Smartphone version of this operating system does not include support for landscape and portrait, only portrait.
The operating system now supports a new form factor (square): 240 by 240 and 480 by 480 (for VGA screens). This new form factor is great for vendors who want to incorporate a hardware keyboard to the device. The 320x240 aspect ratio of the original version made it too clumsy to add a hardware keyboard.
Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition also includes support for Wi-Fi Protected Access (other wise known as WPA).
Windows Mobile 2005
Windows Mobile 2005 is the next generation version of Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system, code-named Magneto.
