Winnipeg River - Definition and Overview

The Winnipeg River is a Canadian river which flows from Lake of the Woods in the province of Ontario to Lake Winnipeg in the province of Manitoba and eventually empties into Hudson Bay via the Nelson River. This river is 813 km long and drains an area of 135,000 km², mainly in Canada.

It was an important transportation route to western Canada for fur traders and explorers. The first Europeans to explore the river are believed to have been the sons of the French explorer la Vérendrye, Jean-Baptiste and Pierre Jr. There are a number of hydroelectric plants on the river.
