The Wintu were Native Americans who lived in what is now Northern California. They lived on the west side of the Sacramento Valley from the river to the coast range, to the north of the Wintun. There were about 12,000 Wintu in 1770 and 1,000 in 1910. The 1930 Census reported 512 Wintu, Wintun and Wappo. The Wintu spoke a language in the Penutian linguistic family. The Wintu lived by hunting and gathering. They lived in small groups without centralized political authority.
