Wittenoom,Western Australia is a ghost town that was once Australia's biggest blue-asbestos mine. It is about 1418km north of Perth via Great Northern Highway. It was once Pilbara's biggest town in the 1950's before being shut down in 1966 due to health concerns of asbestos mining. Today few determined residents, around 30 remains despite the WA government's intention of demolishing the town wholesale. Many of the old buildings from the mining days remain and huge mounds of toxic tailings from the asbestos mining can be found nearby. Wittenoom is close to spectacular and beautiful gorges of the nearby Hamersley Range.
