Wollin Wollin

Wollin - Definition and Overview

Wolin or Wollin is an island located in the Baltic Sea located just off the Polish coast. It is nearly connected to the island of Usedom. Water from the Oder river (Odra) flows into the Szczecin Bay (in Polish Zalew Szczeciński; in German Stettiner Haff), through the strait into Pomeranian Bay (in Polish Zatoka Pomorska; in German Pommersche Bucht), which is a part of the Baltic Sea.

  • Area: 265 km²
  • Highest point: Mt. Grzywacz, 115 m above sea level

Most of the island consists of forests and postglacial hills. Located in the middle is the Wolin National Park.

History

An anonymous mediæval document of ca. 850, called Bavarian Geographer mentions the tribe of Volinians who have 70 strongholds (Uelunzani civitates LXX). Some have speculated that the semi-legendary settlement of Jomsborg may have been sited on the island.
