The Woodsmen of the World are a Fraternal Organization founded in 1883 in Lyons, Iowa by Joseph Cullen Root as the Modern Woodsmen.
In 1890 the Woodsmen of the World was formed as a fraternal and self-help society.
It now has many of the aspects of a modern insurance company.
The most enduring physical legacy of the order may be the number of distinctive headstones erected in the shape of severed tree by members in American cemeteries.
