World Business Council for Sustainable Development - Definition and Overview

The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) is a coalition of 175 international companies united by a shared commitment to sustainable development via the three pillars of economic growth, ecological balance and social progress.

The WBCSD was created in 1995 in a merger of the Business Council for Sustainable Development and the World Industry Council for the Environment and is based in Geneva, Switzerland.

It works on a variety of aspects related to sustainable development, i.e. sustainable livelihoods, energy & climate, corporate social responsibility, eco-efficiency and sustainable health systems.

Among its members are well-known companies such as DaimlerChrysler, General Motors, Dupont, 3M, Deutsche Bank, Coca-Cola, Sony, BP and Shell.
