World Universities Debating Championships - Definition and Overview

The World Universities Debating Championship is the highest-profile tournament in university debating. It is a parliamentary debating event, held in the British Parliamentary format. It has been organized in its current form since the 1980-1981 year, although similar international tournaments have been run since the early 20th century.

All of major national debating societies are involved in its organization, including the American Parliamentary Debating Association, the Canadian University Society for Intercollegiate Debate, the Australasian Intervarsity Debating Association (http://www.debating.net/aida/), and many others. The World Debating Council consists of every country that competes at the championship, with the president of that country's national debating organization typically serving as the council delegate.

The most successful teams at past world championships have included the Oxford Union Society, the Cambridge Union Society, and the Glasgow University Union.
