Yokaichi, Shiga - Definition

Yōkaichi (八日市市; -shi) is a city located in Shiga, Japan.

As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 44,823 and the density of 852.15 persons per km². The total area is 52.60 km².

The city was founded on August 15, 1954.

It is most famous for the Giant Kite Festival held every May on the fourth Sunday.

On Feb. 11, 2005, Yokaichi will merge with neighboring towns Eigenji, Gokasho, Aito, and Koto towns to form a new city called Higashi Omi.

A sister city of Yokaichi is Marquette, Michigan.
