Zaalbar Zaalbar

Zaalbar - Definition and Overview

Zaalbar is a fictional character from the expanded Star Wars universe.

Zaalbar is a Wookiee in the Windows PC and Xbox console game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. He is the companion and protector of a young Twi'lek named Mission Vao living in the slums of Lower Taris when first encountered and is completely unwilling to discuss his past.

In the beginning of the game 'Big Zee' is captured by Gamorrean slavers, which you must save him from. In return for saving him from the dreaded fate of slavery Zaalbar swears a lifedept to you, basically making him your willing slave.

As the game progresses you are able to go to Kashyyyk where Chuundar, Zaalbar's brother, has become the chief of the Wookies and is selling his enemies to the slavers and eroding the ways of Wookie culture, slowly turning them all into more willing slaves. It turns out that Zaalbar left Kashyyyk as an exile, a 'madclaw', one who has fought using the impressive natural claws all Wookies have but culture forces that they only be used for climbing trees (so as not to be primative beasts and monsters).

Chuundar has betrayed all his people and only a few slaves and exiles know of it, the rest see him as their great leader. You are all taken to Chuundar upon arrival in the Wookie city, where Zaalbar is held imprisoned and you are sent to kill an exile in the lower forest. It turns out that this exile is Zaalbar's father, who too late found the truth in Zaalbar's accusations of Chuundar selling his fellow Wookies.

At this point you can choose to either spare Zaalbar's father, help lead a revolt against the slavers and free the Wookies (keeping Zaalbar in your party) or you can kill the madclaw exile, further ensure the slavery of the Wookie people and leave with the gratitude of Chuundar (loosing Zaalbar).
