Zafu Zafu

Zafu - Definition

A zafu is a meditation cushion sometimes used when sitting zazen in the tradition of Zen Buddhism.

The zafu is both a utilitarian accessory and a symbol of zazen practice. Before and after sitting on the zafu, zen practitioners perform a gassho bow to the cushion, to fellow practitioners, and to the teacher. In The Barn at the End of the World, Mary Rose O'Reilley writes of a nun practicing zazen, that "in those days she was almost alone on the zafu. And I learned to sit there, too."
