Zhou Xuan - Definition and Overview

Zhou Xuan (b. 1 August 1920 - d. 22 September 1957, Shanghai) was a Chinese singer and actress. She was born as Su Pu and raised by adoptive parents. At 13 she took Zhou Xuan as her stage name. 'Xuan' means beautiful jade in Chinese. She became known as 'The Golden Voice' and was a popular star in the late 1930s.

She died of cephalitis following a nervous breakdown, at the age of only 37, having made a total of 43 movies. Her favourite was always Street Angel. This contained two theme songs "Seasons Song" and "The Female Singer" that she sang, which enjoyed long lasting popularity.
