Ziguinchor is the capital of the Casamance region of Senegal. Casamance has long been trying to receive greater autonomy from Dakar. Relations between Dakar and guerillas in Casamance broke down in the mid 1990s and what was once a promising area for development of Senegal's tourist industry is now an attractive area for most tourists from outside the region.
