Zumbi (1655 - November 20, 1695, Pronounced: zoom-bee) was the last of the leaders of Quilombo dos Palmares, in the present-day state of Alagoas, Brazil.
Quilombo dos Palmares was a colony of fugitive slaves escaped from the Portuguese settlements in Brazil. It is one of the main sources of capoeira.
February 6, 1694, after 67 years of resistance against the Portuguese and Dutch colonialists, the colony was destroyed by the troops of Domingos Jorge Velho. Zumbi survived the battle and passed almost two years in hiding until on November 20, 1695 he was killed in an ambush.
