Autogenocide is the extermination of a country's citizens by its own people. "Auto" coming from the Greek meaning "own" or "of one's self" and genocide coming from the Greek word "Genos" meaning "race."

The term was created in the latter half of the 1970s to describe the actions of the Khmer Rouge government of Cambodia.
