 Hunedoara - Definition

Hunedoara (Hungarian: Vajdahunyad, German: Eisenmarkt) is a city in Hunedoara county, Transylvania, Romania.

During the Middle Ages, the Corvins, a powerful Romanian feudal family from Transylvania part of which was King Matthias Corvinus of Hungary, founded there the most important Gothic style secular building in Romania.

There are ethnic Hungarians and Germans living in Hunedoara also. The city is full with green gardens and old trees flank the streets. The Huniazi Castle is under reconstruction, and there are hopes that it will become really a great thing to visit. There is also a big dam a few km up in the mountains, with good tourist facilities.

Under the past century, Hunedoara has increased the population to 86,000 people, holding the second largest steel works in Romania. But now that the CAER soviet market is gone, the city changes the economy and everything else, and the steel works have closed doors, all but a small factory. Rich westerners or romanians now invest in Hunedoara, and people's faith in their city is becoming strong again.
