The name comes from the Latin septem, for "seven" - September was the seventh month of the year until 153 BCE.

In Greek civilization, September was called Boedromion.

• In the Irish Calendar the month is called Me�n F�mhair (literally "Middle of Autumn") and is the middle month of the Autumn season.

• In Canada and the United States, Labo(u)r Day is observed on the first Monday in September.
• In Japan, Respect for the Aged Day is a national holiday celebrated on the third Monday of September. Autumnal Equinox Day is also a national holiday.
